Last night I met up with friends and fellow ABC-ers at Lock 29 in Peninsula. The early dusk was offset by the bright full November moon. Most were geared up to challenge some of the popular trails. The ever-adventurous roadies who love to challenge the valley hills with speed and daring had already changed to their fat tire bikes, brightened their headlights. They were already on a conditioning ride over the trails and towpath. Continue reading

Akron Bike Club Has Blue Skies for Fall Clean Up

ADopt a Highway sign

Saturday, November 5 was a beautiful crisp fall day for the second clean up of the year. ABC WV Fall Camping Adventure-10 Lessons Learned

Fall camping in the mountains is always beautiful but can be quite challenging. This year’s trip held the first weekend in October to Elkins, West Virginia was definitely a trip for the hardy who love challenging themselves and the elements while camping. 10 hardy campers made the trip. A few who planned to camp were unable to join us due to illness or the weather reports. Continue reading

“Rocket” Over to The Mars Girl Spaceship for the ABC Halloween Party

Brewing up the perfect Halloween party is not rocket science. It just takes the right mix of spooky ingredients and the skilled talents of a space sorceress. Member Heidi “Mars Girl” Emhoff has taken hold of the wand this year.

The spaceship crypt is the backyard suitably eerie for a autumnal gathering. The spaceship lands on Saturday, October 29. the crypt opens at 7:30 p.m. A map to the spaceship coordinates is posted on the home page of the club website.  It is expected that the ship will land in Stow, Ohio.

Expect a tame bonfire to chase off the chills and set the mood. In the “spirit” of the night a mysterious keg of brew will be available to ward off evil spirits. Of course, guests are encouraged to bring their own elixirs as well.

It will be an evening for frolic as guest goblins, witches, spooks and other assorted creatures of the night come decked out in their highly imaginative disguises.

A midnight feast will be prepared from the bounty brought from the guests. Please coordinate your selections with Sorceress Heidi so that there is an abundance of choices.

Jim and Judy Birt

Jim and Judy Birt are those unsung heroes who remain backstage but add so much to the ABC. Members for many years, Jim and Judy are the organizers of the popular Roscoe Ramble.  I caught up with them after this year’s edition of the ride to find out a little more about how these two who contribute so much to the club spend their non-ABC time. Taking off from 303 the group grew as they headed north. There were the usual trials of the road, including flat tires. All arrived safely. More than 25 riders, under the able direction of Pat Smith, finally arrived at the West Side Market in time to take in the sites before a lunch at any of the popular food stands. They stood out in their bike jerseys and shoes.

Biking for Charity is Gaining in Popularity

Summer arrives and charities are looking for new ways to raise much needed funds. Biking invitationals are gaining in popularity. Golf outings are on the way out. They are expensive to put on, take a great deal to carry off and hard to build a participants list.

It makes sense that biking invitationals are gaining steam. The cycling community is committed to the sport and always looking for rides to get more time on the road. We also tend to be a highly plugged in to social causes. And we all are trying to get and stay healthy. Continue reading
